The mineral stibnite, a dark grey sulphide of antimony

An unusual pigment, antimony black has been identified in a group of Italian manuscripts and easel paintings dating to c. 1500. It was also used by the French Master of Girard Acarie in one of the grisaille miniatures he painted to illustrate Jacques Le Lieur's Poème sur la Passion.
