A number of historic white pigments based on calcium compounds
White pigments could consist of calcium carbonate, obtained from chalk, limestone, crushed eggshells or mollusc shells (CaCO3); or calcium phosphate obtained from calcined animal bones, also known as ‘bone ash’ (Ca5(OH)(PO4)3).
