Calendar

Texts and Images

The saints whose feasts were written in the Calendar in red ink (rather than the ordinary black ink) were particularly associated with Flanders. They offer no firm evidence for precise localisation, but suggest Bruges as a probable place for the manuscript’s production. Each of the Calendar’s twenty-four pages (two per month) has a full historiated border. The first page for each month depicts the typical Labour of the Month and includes the Zodiac sign within the sky in the landscape border.

The first Calendar page for May has a full border showing a suitor courting a young woman, with musicians serenading below and the Zodiac sign of Gemini in the sky.
