The Hours of Philip the Bold
Votive Masses
Texts and Images
The Votive Masses for major feast days open with images of the relevant feast, saint or object of veneration. Masses written during the original campaign received small miniatures, while those added in the 15th century were illustrated with images of varying sizes and formats.
Elevation of the Host (Votive Mass for the Holy Sacrament)
This 15th-century miniature was painted by the Brussels-based artist known as the Master of the Girart Burial Scenes. Angels attend the priest as he elevates the Host. The altar retable shows the Carrying of the Cross, Crucifixion, Deposition and Resurrection. It is surmounted by folding side panels depicting the Virgin and Christ in Majesty.
