The Macclesfield Psalter
Litany with collects
Texts and Images
The Litany, a series of invocations for mercy and deliverance addressed to the Three Persons of the Trinity, the Virgin Mary and a long list of saints, opens with an ornamental initial and contains multiple, small initials in burnished gold and line-fillers decorated with geometric patterns.
Despite the inclusion of St Edmund of Bury among the martyrs, St Botulph among the confessors and Saints Osyth and Etheldreda among the virgins, which may suggest an East Anglian origin, the Litany, does not point to a specific location. Furthermore, it shows no bias towards any religious order and contains no mendicant saints.
