The first of the seven Penitential Psalms (Psalms 6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, and 142) recited as prayers of contrition and repentance, opens with a large historiated initial D showing the Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John. The full border contains images of the patrons, heraldic shields and grotesques. Remaining text divisions are marked by ornamental initials.
