Recited while mourning the deceased at home and during the service in church before the burial, the Office of the Dead was also a text for private devotion. Its major text divisions received red and blue penwork initials filled with foliate ornament in multicoloured washes, and blue and red penwork initials filled with scrolling patterns in the contrasting colour.
