The Psalter-Hours of Isabelle of France
Calendar
Texts and Images
The Calendar provides the strongest evidence that the manuscript was made for a member of the French royal family. In addition to universal feasts celebrated in France and across Europe, it includes feasts specific to the Sainte-Chapelle. It also records the obits of Louis IX’s closest relatives: his grand-father Philip Augustus (14 July 1223), his father Louis VIII (8 November 1226), his mother Blanche of Castile (27 November 1252), and his brother Robert of Artois (8 February 1249). The text is written in gold and blue, an exceptionally lavish treatment for a Calendar, not found even in the manuscript’s sister book, the St Louis Psalter.
