The Reichenau Epistolary
Binding
Description and Contents
19th century, gold-tooled brown leather over wooden boards. The upper cover once contained an inlaid Byzantine ivory plaque showing Christ Pantocrator. In 1911, the plaque was removed, preserved at the Fitzwilliam Museum’s Department of Applied Arts (M. 13-1904; Goldschmidt and Weitzmann 1934, no. 148), and replaced with a photographic reproduction on the manuscript cover.
