"During a study trip to Cornwall in 1974, I met the well-known potter Michael Cardew. Cardew had visited Ghana in 1942 as a ceramicist at Achimota School, and had travelled to Nigeria in 1952, where he had established the Pottery Training Centre in Abuja [now Suleja]. He spoke very highly of the potters who worked there and I could see how their techniques had affected Cardew’s own work. It made me want to see what he was so excited about! I decided to apprentice at the Abuja Pottery during the summer vacation of 1974. On my arrival in Nigeria, I became more aware of how alive the pottery tradition was there and then in Africa as a whole, and I delighted at the variety of forms, of vessel shapes, sculptures and clay architecture."
