After completing his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, with Johan Ludwig Lund and Christen Købke, Rodhe took study trips to Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. He was inspired by the fertile intellectual environment he found in Munich in the 1840s, where artists from Germany and the Nordic countries shared ideas about practices in landscape painting amid an environment of romanticism, nationalism, and naturalism.
