Neumann belonged to the second generation of Danish Golden Age painters trained under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. While he traveled extensively, including to Turkey, Egypt, and Syria, he found inspiration for his landscape and marine paintings from his native land, particularly the coastline and villages along the northern end of the Jutland peninsula. With his lively brushwork and luminous palette, Neumann was quite adept at capturing the changing effects of light on sea and sky.
