Equity, Belonging and Representation

Equity, Belonging and Representation (EBR) is the framework through which we embed inclusive and anti-racist practice across the Museum.

The Equity, Belonging and Representation Framework does this by bringing together our:

  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion responsibilities
  • Anti-racist commitments
  • Organisational learning from Empowering Culture programme (2020-2024)

What we mean by Equity, Belonging and Representation

  • Equity: Our work seeks to address historical and systemic barriers and take targeted action to address them.
  • Belonging: To ensure that visitors, staff, researchers and community partners are valued and able to participate meaningfully in the Museum.
  • Representation: To include representation of voice, perspective and experience in a range of areas across the Museum.

Our Commitments Through Equity, Belonging, Representation and anti-racist practice, we commit to:

  • Ensuring equitable access to our collections, programmes and opportunity – recognising and addressing historical and systemic barriers
  • Creating conditions where visitors, staff, researchers and community partners are valued and able to engage meaningfully
  • Ensuring that a range of voices, perspectives and experiences are reflected in all elements of our work including decision-making, interpretation and research
  • Acknowledging that our collections and institutional history were shaped within unequal historical systems and seeking to redress this
  • On-going work in examining our legacy and eliminating racism in our institutional systems, policies and processes
  • Embedding sustained action across the whole organisation

We will update this page with details about programmes of work in these areas.
