This accessibility statement applies to https://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/.
This website is run by The Fitzwilliam Museum. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Compliance status
This website is not compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard. The non-compliances are listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons. These are ongoing issues which we plan to resolve by August 2026.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Some decorative images have inappropriate alternative text, so navigation of the site will be slower for people using a screen reader. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-Text Content.
Some images within adjacent image and text links contain inappropriate alternative text, so navigation of the site will be slower for people using a screen reader. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-Text Content.
Pre-recorded videos on the ‘New exhibition’ page do not have synchronised captions, meaning hearing impaired users will not be able to fully understand the information in the videos. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.2 Captions (Pre-Recorded).
Pre-recorded videos on the ‘New exhibition’ page do not have a text transcript or audio description available, meaning visually impaired users will not be able to access the visual information of the videos. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Pre-Recorded).
Pre-recorded videos on the ‘New exhibition’ page do not have an audio description track available, meaning visually impaired users will not be able to access information that is not described or spoken in the main soundtrack. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.5 Audio Description (Pre-Recorded).
Inappropriate text is present in a heading on the ‘Ticketing’ page, meaning that users navigating via headings using a screen reader may become confused. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships.
Some elements on the ‘Ticketing’ page are not contained within an ARIA landmark, meaning screen reader users navigating via landmarks may become confused or miss content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships.
Two-dimensional scrolling is present on the ‘Ticketing’ page, meaning users with mobility issues may struggle to access all the page content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.10 Reflow.
It is not possible to fully interact with the Sketchup functionality on the ‘Example Gallery’ page using a keyboard, meaning users navigating with a keyboard will be unable to engage with the content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.1.1 Keyboard.
The heading structure may be illogical on the ‘Events’ page, meaning users navigating by headings may miss content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks.
Multiple links are present with the same link text on the ‘Become a Friend’ page, meaning screen reader users may be unable to distinguish them from each other. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context).
Some pages are not reachable in multiple ways, meaning that users with visual impairments or cognitive issues may not be able to fully navigate the site. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.5 Multiple Ways.

Users of Dragon Naturally Speaking (speech recognition software) and mobile screen readers cannot interact with the 360 degree photo functionality on the ‘Example Gallery’ page, meaning assistive technology users cannot make full use of the page.
