Be a part of something extraordinary.

Research Associate, Scientific Research

Fitzwilliam Museum (FTC 2 yr in the first instance) £31,406 - £40,927

Welcoming and inclusive working environment

The Fitzwilliam Museum is being transformed. In 2020, a new Senior Leadership Team was welcomed, and the museum also plays a leading role in a new University Strategic Research Initiative on Collections, Connections, Communities and in the recent development of a hub for Archaeological and Heritage Science research in Cambridge, making this an exciting time to join the team. The Museum's Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI) is one of the world's leading centres for teaching and research in conservation. Together with the Fitzwilliam Museum's conservators and scientists, HKI staff form the Fitzwilliam Museum Conservation Division, with responsibilities for conservation not just for the Museum itself but also for the University of Cambridge Museums consortium.

As the principal museum of the University of Cambridge, and one of the largest cultural venues in the region, the Fitzwilliam aims to be a crucial bridge between the University, the city and the rest of the world, with an international reputation for extraordinary research, world class exhibitions, sector-leading public engagement and over half a million artefacts and works of art spanning centuries and cultures.

The postholder will be part of the Scientific Research team, working across the Fitzwilliam and the HKI. The Hamilton Kerr Institute is also going through a period of transformational change under its new Director, bringing together the current team at HKI with the Museum's Conservation and Scientific Research team, to form a new powerhouse of teaching, research and practice as an extraordinary scholarly resource within the University, the region and the world.

The purpose of this role is to carry out technical research and scientific analysis of objects and artworks in the collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum and other institutions across the University of Cambridge. The role holder will investigate and document individual objects and works of art with a combination of non-invasive and invasive analytical tools, and microscopic techniques.

We are seeking a proactive team player with effective communication skills, as much of their work will require interdisciplinary collaboration with other scientists as well as with curators, conservators and scholars from across the University and beyond. In return we offer an encouraging and supportive environment, an attractive pension scheme and many employee benefits such as a shopping discounts scheme.

For an informal conversation about the post, please contact Dr Paola Ricciardi, Senior Research Scientist, via email at pr364@cam.ac.uk

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.

Interviews will be held Wednesday 30th or Thursday 31st March 2022
