Coignet studied under neoclassical painter Jean-Victor Bertin. He enjoyed excursions to the forest of Fontainebleau to paint outdoors and, as a teacher, encouraged his students to do the same. In addition to being known for his spirited brushwork and poetic sensibilities, Coignet was a prolific and meticulous draughtsman and published an important didactic book on landscape painting in 1833.
