Impressionism

Impressionism is an art movement developed by Parisian artists from the early 1860s. The Impressionists worked outside (en plein air) and their style of painting is characterised by small, visible brush strokes that captured the changing light and colour of a natural scene.

Fact sheets about many well-known impressionists including Claude Monet, August Renoir, Edgar Degas and Paul Cezanne are below. We also have works of and by well-known Impressionists who were women, including Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, in our collection.
