"Most artists who are starting out study the work of others and then practise their skills by making work very similar to that of their teachers. This is a process that helps one to gain experience, acquire information and assimilate knowledge as a maker, practically, visually and mentally. When describing this process, I have often used the analogy of a child learning to walk step by step until they can do what the adult is doing, which is to walk without falling. Only then, with instilled confidence, do they begin to try out their own stance and deviate from this mimicry!"
