A Swiss painter and printmaker, Calame studied under François Diday in Geneva. He traveled to the Bernese Oberland and central Switzerland each summer to draw and paint, using these studies to create studio compositions. He went to Holland in 1838 and 1852 to study Dutch landscape painting and also visited Italy in 1844, London in 1850, and the Mediterranean in 1853. Following success in the Paris Salon in 1839, he became renowned for his Alpine views.
