Owing much to the artists of the Danish Golden Age, including his teacher, Peter Christian Skovgaard, La Cour is remembered for his ability to capture the atmospheric quality of landscapes in the countries he visited—France, Italy, and Switzerland—as well as his native Denmark. His honors include the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1871; appointment as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, in 1888; and decoration with the Order of the Dannebrog in 1892.
