Trained as a history painter and portraitist, Court studied under Antoine-Jean Gros at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. In 1821, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome, which came with a stay of three to five years in Rome. Among his many awards, he received the Legion of Honor in 1838, and in 1853, he was appointed director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen, where he remained until his death in 1865.
