The son of a successful gunsmith, Egg entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1836. In the late 1830s he was part of a sketching group called The Clique. He favored literary and historical subjects, including moralizing narratives, which reflected his engagement with social issues. An early supporter of the young Pre-Raphaelites, Egg was influenced by their style and patronized William Holman Hunt in particular.
