Lundbye was particularly interested in capturing the simple, rural characteristics of his native landscape. In 1832, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, and soon after embarked on a trip to Italy via Germany, returning home through Belgium and the Netherlands. Unexpectedly, in 1848, Lundbye joined the Danish Army in the war against Germany and died in the First Schleswig War before reaching the front.
