A student of Jacques-Louis David, Dupré was appointed court painter by the King of Westphalia, Jérôme Bonaparte (youngest brother of Napoleon I). Royal commissions enabled Dupré’s journey to Italy (Naples in 1814–1816 and Rome in 1816–1819 and 1824–1831). His fascination with antiquity led him to travel across the continent as far east as Constantinople. In 1825, he published a book of his travels complete with 40 illustrations.
