Born in Bordeaux in southwestern France, Redon went to Paris to study briefly with Jean-Léon Gérome in 1864. The natural world was at the heart of his symbolist fantasies. His landscape oil sketches, which date from early in his career, anticipate his turn to vibrant hues in the 1890s.
